Games of Chance

Jim Hill, RightBrain/Co-Founder

If you live outside of New England you might not know that there’s a little game this weekend. Just kidding. As much as I love football and watching the Patriots, even I am getting a little bit of overload from all of the H-Y-P-E. So why bring it up?

Well, this newsletter is about goal achievment (so where are the soccer-themed stories?), and the Patriots stand on the “Precipice of Perfection” (trademark pending). It’s been a year for the ages, and if the Pats manage to squeak out a victory Sunday (my prediction: 42-21), the 2007 team will enter the pantheon of sports legends.

Pretty great if you love sports, and even greater if you love success. Bill Belichick has instilled an environment that fosters teamwork and focuses on short term results. Until very recently, the players haven’t even talked about going 19-0. Nope, they talk about one game winning streaks. Only the opponent in front of them matters. Focus and preparation are key.

That short term strategy makes short work of most problems. I think we all realize that we can’t achieve the next milestone without conquering the one we’re on now. Mile 26 only shows up at the end of mile 25. Just isn’t any way around it, but still we often lose track by looking ahead (or at TMZ.com).

However, what really got me this week were the comments by Junior Seau at the team send off celebration. Junior is an 18 year veteran in the NFL. His play as a Patriot has been inspirational for many reasons, but this week I’m celebrating his insight. Here’s what he said:

"I don't care if you're a rookie or an 18-year vet — I don't care if you're a third-grader — all we ever want in life is a chance, just a chance. Does that mean a chance to win the Super Bowl? No, a chance to win. And when you win often, it leads into greater things. And you learn that during the course of life."

Sounds simple, but when coupled with the team strategy he’s managed to tackle one of those elusive “Secrets of Success”.

  • We all want a chance to win
  • Preparation is the key to winning
  • Winning leads to opportunity
  • Lather, rinse, repeat
So here’s my advice for Super Bowl week; stock up on buffalo wings, beer and maalox. OK, try this too; take whatever goal you have today and break it down into managable steps. Focus on one step at a time and don’t get distracted by looking ahead. Soon enough you’ll stand on your own “Precipice of Perfection” and you’ll be ready for your chance.
